This is a joyous and brightly coloured Thanjavur reverse glass painting of Bala (baby) Krishna, from the 1950s. Krishna is the god of compassion, tenderness, and love; and is one of the most popular and widely revered among Indian divinities. Krishna has a peacock feather in his topknot and is adorned with numerous gold jewellery pieces including bracelets, anklets and necklaces. He is shown eating ghee (butter), which he was very fond of from his right hand, and holding the pot of ghee (butter) in the left. Krishna’s parents Yashoda and Nanda are to the left of the painting, and Yashoda is also feeding Krishna a ball of ghee. To the right is a beautiful attendant with a fan, and at the bottom is a bowl of fruits, with two parakeets flanking it. At the top are two pillar capitals with yalis, symbols of protection, with drapery in between and a hanging glass light.
